Therefore, it is a promising research direction to combine the advantages of different sensing sources, because each modality has complementary benefits and drawbacks, as has been shown in other works Bellotto and Hu [5], St-Laurent et al. [9].Additional requirements for our application arise from the fact that the low-cost thermal sensor provides a low resolution image and, therefore, does not allow us to build accurate models for detecting people. Experimental results seem promising considering that the percentage of wrong classifications using only Kinect-based detection algorithms is drastically reduced.

The rest of the paper is organized as follows: In Section II, related work in the area of human detection is presented. We concentrate mainly on work done using machine learning for people detection.
